Functional and trophic diversity of tropical headwater stream communities inferred from carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen stable isotope ratios

چکیده

Tropical freshwaters support an immense diversity of fishes and invertebrates but are understudied in comparison to temperate systems. This is especially true headwater streams, as only a small number studies has assessed the trophic dynamics underpinning food web structure these streams. We used stable isotopes carbon, nitrogen hydrogen determine resource use dominant invertebrate guild seven streams Eastern Western Thailand, functional each community using isotope metrics. Benthic (95% credibility interval: 37–85%) (39–79%) obtained most their resources from autochthonous sources stream allochthonous specialists were evident community. observed increase isotopic associated with increasing size, this was primarily driven by range ratios endmembers rather than diversity. Maximum position did size. The snakehead, Channa gachua, enriched 2H relative all other fishes, possibly reflecting facultative air breathing species. Fish communities analysed filled variety niches, predominantly fuelled primary production.

Variation in trophic shift for stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur

Use of stable isotope ratios to trace pathways of organic matter among consumers requires knowledge of the isotopic shift between diet and consumer. Variation in trophic shift among consumers can be substantial. For data from the published literature and supplementary original data (excluding fluid-feeding consumers), the mean isotopic shift for C was +0.5 0.13‰ rather than 0.0‰, as commonly as...

Stable isotope ratios of marijuana. I. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes describe growth conditions.

There remains significant uncertainty in illicit marijuana cultivation. We analyzed the delta(13)C and delta(15)N of 508 domestic samples from known U.S.A. counties, 31 seized from a single location, 5 samples grown in Mexico and Colombia, and 10 northwest border seizures. For a subset, inflorescences and leaves were analyzed separately. These data revealed a strong correspondence, with inflore...

Use of stable isotope ratios for profiling of industrial ephedrine samples: application of hydrogen isotope ratios in combination with carbon and nitrogen.

The utility of hydrogen stable isotope ratio measurement by IR-MS for establishing the origin of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (ephedrines), precursors of methamphetamine, was evaluated. There are two kinds of commercial semisynthetic ephedrines, one produced from molasses and the other from pyruvic acid. While the semisynthetic ephedrines derived from pyruvic acid cannot be discriminated from ...

Variation of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen stable isotope ratios in an American diet: fast food meals.

The stable isotopes of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen provide insights into a heterotrophic organism's diet and geographic origin. Although the contribution of food delta (2)H and delta (18)O to the final tissue signal will not vary for constrained diets, it will for animals eating varied diets, that is, humans. This study surveyed the isotopic range in one portion of the American diet,...

Measure of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in cultured cells.

We report the measurement of the natural isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon in subcellular volumes of individual cells among a population of cultured cells using a multi-isotope imaging mass spectrometer (MIMS), [MIMS is the prototype of the NanoSIMS 50, Cameca, France.] We also measured the nitrogen and carbon isotope ratio in cells after they had been cultured in media enriched with the am...
